Steps to avoid kids binge watching on TV

Updated: Sep 30, 2023

Your child's total screen time might be greater than you realized. Start monitoring it, and talk to your child about the importance of sitting less and moving more. Also, explain screen time rules — and the consequences of breaking them.

Let's explore few steps to avoid kids binge watching on TV, for a good reason.

Set Limits: Set limits on how much screen time your child can have. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children aged 2 to 5 should not have more than one hour of screen time per day, while children aged 6 and above should not have more than two hours.

Encourage Other Activities: Encourage your child to engage in other activities such as reading books, playing board games, playing outside, doing puzzles or crafting.

Make TV Time Meaningful: Select programs that are educational and informative, and guide them through the content allowing for discussion and engagement with the material.

Avoiding Having TV as a Background Noise: Keep the TV turned off when no one is watching it, as background noise can be distracting to kids and can lead to a heightened dependence on the electronic devices

Model Healthy Behaviors: Lead by example and limit your own screen time in front of your children.

Set a Specific Time: Plan a specific time when the child can watch television, say weekends afternoons or evening; this will help in reducing the amount of screen time a child gets

Be Consistent: Be consistent and firm about the limits you set, enforcing the rules about tv time with loving firmness.

Reward Your Child: You can offer a reward for good behavior against TV watching, avoid using TV time as a positive reinforcement in their growth. Perhaps offer an outing, a treat or other such incentives instead.
